Mechanical-Engineering and Technical Faculty

Since its establishment till today, Mechanical-Engineering and Technical Faculty (METF) has passed through three main stages of its development, which are directly related to the development of Technical University – Sofia.

First stage - On 12 June, 1941, in the State Gazette No. 128, the Law on Higher Technical Education in Bulgaria was published, with two faculties – Construction and Architecture and Mechanical-Engineering and Technical. In 1942, a Commission was established, which had to analyse the conditions to commence educational activity in METF, but due to the situation of war, a particular decision was not made. By a Decree of the Regent No. 66, dated 22 March, 1945, the two faculties were established.

Second stage - The opening of many new subjects and courses makes carrying out the educational process difficult and in 1953 the State School of Engineering divides into four schools of higher education – Mechanical Engineering Institute, Engineering and Construction Institute, Chemical Technology Institute and Mining and Geology Institute. In the structure of the Mechanical Engineering Institute remain the Mechanical Engineering and the Electrical Engineering Faculties, with a total of 21 departments. During this stage, the structure of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty was established. The Department of Mechanical Technologies divides into two departments – Material Knowledge and Metal Technology in metal-cutting machines and processing by cutting.

Third stage - With Decree No. 71/18.06.1963 of the Council of Ministers, Order No. 858/01.07.1963 of the Ministry of National Education and Order No. 959/06.07.1963 of the Rector of MEI, Prof. D-r Georgi Bradistilov, the Mechanical and Technological Faculty was established as a branch to MEI.

Simultaneously with the educational activity, lectors, research associates and engineers in METF established a very high level and scale of education, a wide range of scientific, research and master activity, and contribute to establishing the name of the Faculty among the science community in Bulgaria and abroad.
